Entrance to Phirima Lodge at golden hour
About

A private lodge on the Black Rhino Reserve.

Phirima Lodge is a four-chalet, owner-hosted retreat tucked into the western edge of the Pilanesberg - let exclusively to one party at a time, with the whole property, the ranger, and the rhythm of the bush set entirely around your stay.

The name

Phirima takes its name from the Tswana word for "the place where the sun sets"- a fitting name for a lodge built to catch the last gold light over the Pilanesberg crater each evening. Set within the Black Rhino Game Reserve, it offers a private home in the middle of the bush, fenced and secured within its own hectare, yet open in spirit to the wildlife and landscape that surround it.

The story

A Private Hectare in a 55,000-Hectare Wilderness

The Pilanesberg National Park unfolds across more than 55,000 hectares of ancient volcanic crater - ridges and valleys formed some 1,200 million years ago, now home to the Big Five and over 360 species of birdlife. Within this vastness, the Black Rhino Game Reserve occupies a quieter, more exclusive corner on the western boundary, with full traversing rights into the greater Pilanesberg.

Phirima Lodge claims just one hectare of this land as entirely its own - a private, fenced compound holding the lodge, its pool, its boma, and its waterhole deck. It is a deliberate contrast: the intimacy of a single private hectare, set against the scale of an entire game reserve waiting beyond the fence line.

Naming & heritage

Named for the Land

Every room at Phirima Lodge carries a name rooted in this place. The main lodge, Lesebe, is named for a Black Rhino bull of the reserve - a quiet nod to the animal for which the reserve itself is named. The four chalets - Mavuso, Pilane, Amarula, and Nkemele - each carry their own resonance. These are not decorative titles; they are a small, ongoing act of respect for the land and its history.

  • Pilane

Hosting philosophy

Privately Owned. Personally Managed.

Phirima Lodge is owned by Cape Gannet (Pty) Ltd and is independently managed, with its own dedicated reservations and hosting team overseeing every stay from first enquiry to departure. There is no large hotel group standing between you and the people who run this lodge - only a small, attentive team who know the lodge, the reserve, and its rhythms intimately.

An on-site housekeeper and lodge host attend to the home itself, while a resident game ranger - with his own vehicle, reserved exclusively for Phirima Lodge's guests - leads every game drive and walking safari. The result is hospitality that feels personal because it is: a small team, a single lodge, and a guest list of one party at a time.

The setting

Big Five, Two Hours from Johannesburg

The Pilanesberg sits within the North West Province, making it an easy choice for families and international guests alike. It is one of the most accessible Big Five destinations in South Africa - close enough for a long weekend, wild enough to feel a world away.
